Congratulations to Shoshanah Blaiss, who won this week’s Birth Goddess charm giveaway. Shoshanah shared what gave her confidence during her birth experience:

“The thing that gave me the most confidence during my recent (May 14) VBAC was knowing a lot of women had my back! The mamas of ICAN of Atlanta, the members of the yahoo groups for HBAC and Hypnobabies, and the women who participated in my blessingway were all very much present during the amazing and transformative experience. And, of course, my two awesome doulas had a lot to do with it as well! They all believed in me, and it allowed me to believe in myself,” she says.

As part of the contest, a half-dozen more mamas shared their birth confidence-builders, too, from ipod playlists to Ina May’s amazing books.

Shoshanah, after her "amazing and transformative" VBAC.

Shoshanah, RN, BSN, CLC, is a Baby Steps Educator & Lactation Counselor in Atlanta, and she has plans to attend midwifery school. When she found out she won the birth goddess charm giveaway, she said “I’m so excited! I almost never enter contests because the prizes aren’t worth my effort, but I just had a wonderful VBAC and so this charm will mean so much!”

Here’s wishing Shoshanah great health and abundance as she pursues her midwifery dreams!

Sleep Sanity

mamahhh_2011-03 no sleep

During pregnancy, we mamas devote a lot of energy to thinking about birth birth birth. After birth, approximately 150 percent of our energy is redirected to sleep sleep sleep. Some lucky new parents receive the amazing gift of a sleep-friendly baby. The rest of us? We become dedicated students of the art of sleep, or lack of.

If you are deep into the study of helping a baby sleep and still manage to have a little energy and focus leftover, the Chicago Tribune is hosting a chat about babies’ sleep next week, Tuesday, March 15, at noon, CST.

The Babies’ Sleeping Issues Live Health Chat will feature pediatricians Dr. Marc Weissbluth and Dr. Bob Sears. Weissbluth is the author of Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. He advocates sleep training. Sears is the co-author in the Sears Parenting Library, including “The Baby Sleep Book.” He supports parents who practice co-sleeping.

Wise to the fact that a good many of us moms are sleep deprived and super-busy, the Chicago Tribune offers a handy email reminder service to ensure you don’t sleep through the web chat. (Now if only that came with a “snooze” feature that guaranteed 20 more minutes of dreamtime!)

Belly Love

The roundness of my belly has nothing to do with being pregnant, at least not now. Two-and-a-half years have passed since I last carried a child that way.

Beautiful You

The last time I felt truly beautiful, I was nearly 9 months pregnant. Where my body loves to cling to the carbs I crave, instead a baby snuggled in the space of my belly.
