No-Fear Solo Parenting

Earlier this week, a revelation: I no longer fear the solo-parenting stint. Single parents may roll their eyes or snicker a bit. After all, they’re pros! But for me, parenting without backup has typically involved a lot of yelling, a ton of tension in my body, sad-turning-to-mad kids, and finally, a side of self-loathing to compensate for crummy parenting. So this week was a milestone. My husband was away for a long business trip. Normally, I’d have some handwringing around that, and a ‘circle the girlfriends and ready the margaritas’ mantra in mind. I’ll still be plenty glad to have my … [Read more...]

An Equinox Treasure ~ Balance and Gratitude

My dear friend Beth—mother, writer, web designer, photographer, a principal at Thrasher Photo & Design LLC, and all-around beautiful artiste!—recently shared an impressive, inspiring list of "little" home improvements her family made during the past few months. Well, she called them little; I think they're amazing! Here is Beth's “Fall Equinox Thankfulness List—the things we have done to make change on a small scale in our world, since summer solstice.” Canceled cable television and put an end to politics, violence, and corporate America in our home (and will save enough money to … [Read more...]

Baby, You’re a Firework

OK, OK, it's a bit cute for the 4th of July, but sometimes pop culture serves it up just right. So go on: ignite your light, and let it shine. There's wisdom in that, cliché or not. Enjoy the day, mamas, and shine brightly for those who love you. Show them what you're worth. Dare to be the sparkling, exciting, amazing example of the kind of life you hope your little ones will live! … [Read more...]

More love, for you and America the Beautiful

More love, for you and America the Beautiful

More love. That was the antidote recently suggested by my friend and teacher Baraka Elihu: Instead of dwelling on what we don’t like about ourselves and trying to change it or get rid of it, what if we layered on more love? From kids to co-workers to our partner and for our own sweet selves, what if? What if we simmered in more beauty, more fun, more happiness, more peace? This holiday weekend, celebrating freedom in the midst of the sticky-hot weather and kids all amped up on summer vacation, seems like a good time to try it out. More love. More beauty. More fun. More happiness. We’re free … [Read more...]

My Gardening Karma is Squirrelly

Maybe it’s the sparkling shine of summer on my children’s darling little faces or just a phase my girls are going through, but they are The Cutest Kids in the World these days. Even when I’m losing my cool, I have a huge crush on them. So this morning, I was feeling exceptionally crush-y about my cuties and really proud about these beautiful petunias we’ve grown in pots on our front porch. The girls and I have been working together (let’s do teamwork!) to water the plants each morning. They take turns with the watering can, sharing the splashing and the sense of accomplishment. And it’s … [Read more...]
