As a prenatal yoga teacher, I love a birth story that includes a little yoga! So I adored getting this note last spring from mama Ellen, who filled me in on the birth of her beautiful daughter Safia Rose… Safia was born April 2 at 1:48 p.m. She was 7 pounds 8 ounces and 19-1/2 inches long. I was in labor for 15 hours and yoga really got me through! Especially the Sat Nam mantra - which got me through the hardest parts and helped push the baby out! The Sat Nam mantra we often used in class was inspired by the lovely Prenatal Kundalini Yoga and Meditation for Mothers to Be DVD by Gurmukh … [Read more...]

Birth Story: How Birth Was Meant To Be

How Birth Was Meant to Be

Mama: Maureen Hunt Baby: Madeline, born March 3, 2007, at 4:27 p.m., 8 pounds 3 ounces, 20¼ inches Excerpted from Belly Button Bliss:  A Small Collection of Happy Birth Stories With my first baby, I had an uncomplicated, scheduled Cesarean section at thirty-nine and a half weeks. My baby was breech, and she stayed that way despite the acupressure and moxibustion I’d tried to encourage her to turn. After the C-section, we were both physically fine, but I felt I had lost my power as a mother. I felt like I didn’t give birth to my baby. The doctors pulled her out of me, and … [Read more...]

Mama: Kirsten Ellenbogen Baby: Ezra, born October 29 at 1:35 a.m., weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces, and measuring 21½ inches Excerpted from Belly Button Bliss:  A Small Collection of Happy Birth Stories No one tells you that your body keeps producing amniotic fluid, so when my water broke with my second baby, I sat around much of the day as I had with my first: trying not to leak too much. After twelve hours of minor, irregular labor pains, my midwife asked me to come to the hospital. I was given a gentle once-over and sent home. We all agreed my contractions weren’t that impressive. … [Read more...]

Birth Story: A Whole New Person is in the World

Mama: Julie Moon Baby: Scarlett, born February 28 at 11:11am, 8 pounds 13 ounces, 21 3/4 inches Excerpted from Belly Button Bliss:  A Small Collection of Happy Birth Stories I awake around 3:45 a.m. on my due date with contractions about six minutes apart. A terrible storm rages outside. I call my mother and my best friend, Stephanie, to give them time enough to arrive for Scarlett’s birth. My husband, Joe, is awake too, fixing a snack. My son, Jackson, is cozy and safe at his grandparents’ house, where he’d gone to spend the night when I recognized the signs of early labor the … [Read more...]

Sacred Ceremony

Mama Bridget and Baby Liam, Halloween 2008

After years of witnessing other women bring babies into the world as a doula, I wanted my birth time to be a sacred ceremony. So I chose to birth at home, with midwives and a birth coach. On April 28, one week past our “guess date,” I was on my yoga mat, rolling around on my exercise ball. I’d had some contractions, and I was anxious to get things under way. Suddenly I heard a loud pop—and my water broke, gushing all over the yoga mat. I called my dear yoga teacher, Ana Forrest, and spoke with her as I waited for my “team” to arrive. When my midwives checked me, I was 3 centimeters … [Read more...]
