5 Tips for a Great Prenatal Yoga Class

I’ve lost a lot of sleep during my past five years of parenting, but I still remember how I felt walking in to attend my first prenatal yoga classes. It was a total new-kid experience, with me wondering nervously who were all these chatty mamas, and why was everyone so darn happy?! Clearly, they'd all been best friends forever and were planning for their yet-to-be-born-kiddos to be BFFs too! It didn’t matter that I was a yoga teacher, or that I knew the teacher leading the class. I still felt a little alone, a little unsure—an experience that’s true for so many aspects of a first pregnancy! … [Read more...]

The Baby Comes Out Where??

The baby comes out where?

Why aren’t women educating themselves about childbirth? If our rising maternal death rate, high Cesarean-section rate, and abysmal childbirth education attendance isn’t enough to prove—or at least strongly suggest—the need for more education about birth, let me share this with you: Early in my 20s, when I had it all figured out but was typically clueless about life, a pregnant friend who was a few years older posed an important question: “Where exactly,” she asked, “does the baby come out?” She was clear about her basic bodily functions, namely elimination (or, in the mommy … [Read more...]

I just got home from teaching prenatal yoga, and I was reminded how easy it is to lose sight of the magic of birth. First-time mamas are sorting out the dozens of details about care providers, what's normal, hormonal ups and downs, what clothes to put on a suddenly unfamiliar body, expectations from extended family, and so, so much more. Second-time (and beyond!) mamas are coping with childcare arrangements, wondering about VBACs, dealing with the emotional leftovers of previous birth experiences, and trying to figure out why this pregnancy is nothing like the last one, or struggling with … [Read more...]

Three years ago, more or less to the day, I was just a few days shy of 40 weeks pregnant with my second baby. We lived in Minneapolis at the time, and the amazing Krishna Das was in town. With my belly full, I ventured out to the kirtan, surrounded by yoga mamas, music lovers, and KD devotees. The call-and-response music moved through my body, the deep rhythms vibrating with bliss and lifting my heart. I danced with my little one nestled in my pelvis, and about a week later, we danced again as she made her way into the world. I’d hoped that the powerful intonations and the sound of voices … [Read more...]

Giveaway: A Journal for Your Story

Dear mamas, I found the sweetest journals this week. Honestly, I need another journal like I need an extra hole in my head, as the saying goes. A half-dozen, half-finished journals take up space on a shelf in my office right now! But a beautiful journal is just irresistible --all that space, the possibilities, the inviting open pages-- too promising to pass up! On the cover of these journals, a bit of poetry tugs at the heart. One in particular so clearly spoke to the dreams that are important to me right now: She's turning her life into something sacred: Each breath a new birth. Each … [Read more...]
