Dancing with my Daughters

Three years ago, more or less to the day, I was just a few days shy of 40 weeks pregnant with my second baby. We lived in Minneapolis at the time, and the amazing Krishna Das was in town. With my belly full, I ventured out to the kirtan, surrounded by yoga mamas, music lovers, and KD devotees. The call-and-response music moved through my body, the deep rhythms vibrating with bliss and lifting my heart. I danced with my little one nestled in my pelvis, and about a week later, we danced again as she made her way into the world. I’d hoped that the powerful intonations and the sound of voices … [Read more...]

Safe Harbor Mama

Safe Harbor Mama

A few weeks ago in my weekly women's circle, our "homework" was to "try on" something we really wanted to be or do. To act as if. To practice a little fake-it-til-you-make-it. I decided to check out what it felt like to be a "safe harbor" mama. To me, that’s the kind of mother who creates a welcoming, safe place for her children, no matter what's going on. It was a picture-perfect day, with not a camera in sight, so I have only my heart as evidence of our blissful day. Then we headed downtown to meet my husband for lunch and followed that with a trip to our favorite frozen yogurt place near … [Read more...]

Wishcasting: Patience and Presence

Mamahhh_2011-0504 AAmoments

It's Wishcasting Wednesday over at Jamie Ridler Studios. This week she's asking, "What do you wish to know?" I wish to know which moments with my daughters will become their memories. First memory, best memory, most powerful memory, funniest, happiest, sweetest, worst memory ... Which moments will forever shape the arc of their stories, the ones they'll tell to a best friend or a first love? If I knew that, would I speak differently? Laugh more? Reprimand less? Make more magic? I wish for the patience and presence to create a multitude of sparkly moments and sweet memories with my … [Read more...]
