Before the Birth Plan, A Pregnancy Plan

I’m worried about the state of birth in our society. Fewer doctors know what drug-free childbirth looks like. Vaginal births are on the decline in too many places. More moms think their care providers are going to educate them about childbirth during the already too-short appointments dedicated to checking on mom’s and baby’s prenatal health. And it feels a lot like we’re conceding birth as a medical event, rather than protecting it as the wholly natural and empowering experience it can be. Let’s be clear: I don’t believe the only “good” birth is a natural birth. I don’t think OBs are the … [Read more...]

Birth Story: Jenna’s VBAC

mamahhh_2012-0405_JennaPostpartum

It’s a perfect September fall day, warm and sunny, not as humid as summertime. We canoe down the Broad River—me in the front, my husband, Matt, in the back, and our son, Bodey, in the middle. Eight weeks pregnant with baby #2, I tire easily and can’t exert myself. I turn around in the canoe to sit. Leaning back, I simply stare up, noticing how the sky is edged by the trees. The wonder-woman behind BWF is January, a home-schooling mother to five littles age 8 and under. She’s a … [Read more...]

Congratulations to Shoshanah Blaiss, who won this week's Birth Goddess charm giveaway. Shoshanah shared what gave her confidence during her birth experience: "The thing that gave me the most confidence during my recent (May 14) VBAC was knowing a lot of women had my back! The mamas of ICAN of Atlanta, the members of the yahoo groups for HBAC and Hypnobabies, and the women who participated in my blessingway were all very much present during the amazing and transformative experience. And, of course, my two awesome doulas had a lot to do with it as well! They all believed in me, and it … [Read more...]

Birth with Confidence

This week here at Mamahhh, moms and moms-to-be shared their thoughts about what gave them confidence for labor and birth. From ipods to Ina May, here's wishing you the confidence you need for a beautiful birth! ~xoxox, jenni A couple things gave me confidence during the labor and birth of my twins in January of this year. The first was a really comprehensive Lamaze class. I felt totally prepared and confident in my ability to labor and give birth the way I wanted after 4 weeks of class. The second was my labor support team – my two amazing doulas, my loving husband, and my kind and … [Read more...]
